Featured Scholarships – December 13, 2023

This week, Complete College Advising is excited to highlight more than 550 Thompson Family Scholarships which have a total value over $3.5M. These scholarships averaging $5500 each (!!) are available to students attending Grand Valley State University, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan Tech and Bowling Green State University.

I’ve awarded $25 million dollars in scholarships over the last two decades. Based on that experience, I believe these scholarships below are worth your time!

  • New incoming, first year, student, pursuing a four-year degree
    Considered as a member of a working family, not necessarily urban or poor
    Preference will be given to students with the largest gap between eligible aid and tuition
    Veterans of any full time U.S. or National Guard military service in excess of one year will have the new first year criteria waived and will have special attention in the process
  • Fields: Applicants may pursue any major.
  • Requirements: The application period opens November 1. A completed FAFSA is required. 
  • This scholarship is $5,500 per year funded by the Thompson Foundation, and is renewable for 3 additional years. In addition, GVSU pledges to match at least $5,500 per year of GVSU funds for these students.
  • Renewable for three additional years. Recipients must maintain a 2.75 GPA or higher, maintain good standing, meet the University’s standards of academic progress (SAP) and have submitted their verification of service obligation. 
  • Deadline: March 31, 2024

Eligibility:

  • Admitted freshman who will be a full time student (minimum 12 credits/semester)
  • Minimum high school GPA of 3.4
  • ACT/SAT scores are optional, but priority consideration will be given to students with a minimum ACT of 24 or SAT of 1120
  • Demonstrate financial need via a FAFSA
  • Demonstrate a past history of extracurricular activity and community service
  • Demonstrate a parent/guardian is working
  • Provide the name of a high school teacher/counselor/administrator who can serve as a reference
  • Awards: This scholarship is $5,500 per year funded by the Thompson Foundation, and is renewable for 3 additional years. In addition, SVSU pledges to match at least $5,500 per year of SVSU funds for these students.
  • Deadline: March 15, 2024

Eligibility:

  • Michigan resident
  • Classified as a dependent student on their FAFSA
  • Student Aid Index (SAI) between -1,500 and 16,000
  • At least one working parent
  • Complete the Rollin A. Jones and James E. Lindstrom Working Families Scholarship Application by March 1. (application opens in January) 
  • Submit an essay addressing the following topic: “What are you passionate about and how will this scholarship help you achieve your goals at Michigan Tech?”
  • Provide one (1) letter of recommendation
  • Award: This scholarship is $5,500 per year funded by the Thompson Foundation, and is renewable for 3 additional years.
  • Deadline: March 1, 2024
  • The Thompson Working Families Scholarship is a need-based scholarship program focused on rewarding academic success and a commitment to service. The $5,500 Thompson Scholarship combined with BGSU’s match of $5,500 (which may adjust your current aid package) totals an $11,000 scholarship/year, which is renewable. In addition, each scholar in our program receives:
  • One-on-one support from your scholarship advisor
  • Group service events with other Thompson Family Scholars
  • Personal and professional development opportunities
  • Social interaction and engagement opportunities
  • Ongoing communication throughout the program
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Summer Link or One-Day Orientation Program to ease the transition to BGSU
  • Deadline: February 15, 2024
